About
A place to explore ideas freely.
Stoa Labs is an independent agentic AI company based in Orlando, Florida. We exist to explore agentic AI from first principles, and to engineer what we learn into systems that can be trusted with real work. The exploration is open-ended on purpose: ideas get followed because they are worth understanding. The engineering is where they prove out.
We are developing Boundary Engineering, a capability-level method for deciding where model judgment belongs, what authority it should receive, which limits software must enforce, what evidence establishes success, and how failure will be contained. Our R&D practice develops the method and its supporting engineering. Our consulting practice begins with one consequential workflow and helps its technical owner make a defensible production-authority decision, remediate the identified boundaries, and maintain assurance as the system changes.
We are a deliberately small, agent-augmented company. We are building our own operations on the same class of systems we engineer, beginning with explicit Boundary Profiles and Capability Ledgers for consequential capabilities. As that work produces evidence, we will publish how the systems are designed, evaluated, and limited, because the strongest claim we can make is one that can be inspected.
Five commitments
Exploration is the engine
We follow ideas because they are worth understanding, before anyone asks what they are worth commercially.
First principles first
We check the foundation before building on it.
Autonomy is earned
Each capability earns its autonomy through evidence, enforced boundaries, and recovery paths.
Reliability is the product
Not a feature added before an audit.
See clearly, say plainly
About our own systems, and about what this technology can and cannot yet do.
Where this is going: a research-led product house, deliberately small, whose products graduate from open exploration into systems people trust with consequential work.
The founders
Stoa Labs was founded by engineers and entrepreneurs with decades of experience building production machine-learning, data, and software systems end to end. Their work has included creating and operating technology companies, contributing to open-source engineering, and leading the adoption of emerging technologies across technical organizations. Much of that experience was earned in secure, large-scale, and operationally constrained environments where reliability is a precondition for deployment.
The company grew out of a recurring observation from that work: agentic systems earn trust through engineering, not enthusiasm. The systems that survive production are the ones where someone decided deliberately what must be controlled, where model judgment adds value, what may cross the boundary between them, and how the result will be verified. Stoa Labs exists to practice that discipline in the open.
The name
The name reflects the temperament behind the company. The founders share a practical interest in Stoic philosophy and its dichotomy of control: the discipline of seeing clearly what can be governed and acting accordingly. The ancient stoa was a public, covered walkway used for meeting, teaching, and civic life. Stoa Labs takes it as a model for technical exploration conducted openly, close to working problems, and with the discipline to engineer what holds.
